Three Ways to Upgrade Your Website's SEO Right Now

Written by: Libby Goddard

By now, you probably know how important search engine optimization is for the success of your website and business, but if you’ve been too embarrassed to ask, search engine optimization (SEO) is optimizing your site and content to perform well in an organic search. If you have dreams of your site dominating the SERPs (search engine results pages), there are ways to optimize your site to improve your rankings for certain keywords and services. Read below about our three favorite tips on how you can quickly improve your website's SEO today.

User Experience

When you click onto your website, what do you want to see? Can you get the information you need quickly and clearly? Is the site fast to load, pleasant to read, and easy to navigate? All of these things impact your search engine optimization. User experience factors into how long visitors stay on your site. This is called dwell time. The longer visitors are on your site and the more they click into their site, the more Google considers you an “authority” and a source of information, thus giving you better rankings on the results pages. The better the user experience is on your site, the more it impacts your SEO.

Site Structure

You don’t have to be an expert in site coding to upgrade some of your website’s structure. There are some things that can improve your rankings and don’t require a college degree. Here are some easy and important things to implement:

- Optimize your image alt tags

- Make sure your content pages have the proper headings

- Fix or remove any broken links

Optimizing your image alt tags are easy and can greatly improve your page’s rankings. In your site’s multimedia library, adding tags to your images that work in your priority keywords and service area can help your rankings. In regards to the headings on your site pages, no one wants to read a wall of text. Add one H1 as your page title, and break up the rest of your content using H2s and H3s. These headers are crawled by Google’s bots and give Google a better idea of what your pages are about, helping them in the rank on the SERPs. Finally, check to make sure none of the links on your site are broken. Dead links tank your usability and page rankings. Instead of combing through each page of your site, use a website app like Screaming Frog to check for all broken links on your site at once.

Using a Cohesive Brand Name

In short, pick a name and stick to it. You want your site, and therefore your brand, to be easily found by customers on search engines. Choosing a search-friendly name and utilizing that same name across your whole site is a major step to ranking for branded searches. For example, we always use “Rein Communications” when referring to our company in our content. If we were using different names like “Rein,” “Rein Co.” or “RC,” throughout our site, it would confuse Google’s crawlers, complicate our branding, and hurt our rankings if someone were to Google “Rein Communications.” Do a sweep of your content pages to make sure your brand is cohesive. Your rankings will thank you!

SEO is intimidating and can feel complicated. But once you have a plan in place, stick to it. Just remember, search engine optimization is a long game, so don’t expect to be ranking number one immediately after making a few tweaks. However, every step in the right direction means an improvement for your site!
